Following on from last month’s tip about researching appropriate keywords to target for your site’s optimisation, this month we’re looking at how to include the keywords into the content on the page.
In order for your optimisation to be effective, the keywords must be included in the body text of the page, with about 200 words of content, not a couple of sentences. We’re not just talking a few keywords here and there, nor are we suggesting that you repeat your keywords to death and turn your visitors right off your site!
Writing keyword rich content is a bit of an art. You must always keep in mind that your content must flow and not sound contrived in any way or make it obvious that it has been optimised to the hilt.
So where do you start?
Once you have identified which keywords you want to use on each page of your website, then start with a nice keyword rich title on the page (preferably using an H1 or H2 tag) – ‘Welcome to the xxx website’ won’t do – you need to tell your visitors immediately what your site offers,
and if you’re selling holidays in Greece for example, write this in the title – “Specialists in tours and holidays in Greece”. If you’ve won any awards, all the better: “Award winning holidays in Greece”.
Once you have a nice title on your page, as you go through your page content make sure the keywords are inserted within the content so that it flows. Use more keyword rich sub-headings using H2 or H3 tags - this breaks down the content and makes it easier on the eye, and easier to read. Don’t overdo your keywords either, only choose 2-3 per page at most otherwise you will dilute their effect.
Finally, once you’re happy with the optimised content on your site, don’t forget to write appropriate title and meta description tags for each page (don't worry too much about the meta keywords tag as it plays such an insignificant part in the optimisaton). Also include your keywords in links to other pages on your website.
These are some of the most basic considerations you need to make when inserting keywords into your page content, and by following these guidelines, ensures the effectiveness of your web page optimisation.
