Pay per Click (PPC) advertising (search advertising or sponsored links) is a great way of kicking off your search engine marketing campaign. It enables you to see immediate results from the search engines, bringing in new leads and enquiries very quickly.

How does PPC advertising work?
Pay per Click advertising works on a basis whereby you bid on chosen key phrases relevant to your products & services, and appear at the top of the search engine results or as high as your budget allows. What's more, you only pay when someone actually clicks on the link to your website. However, the more popular the search term, the higher you will need to bid.

PPC really helps when you can't wait 6 months for the regular search engines to index & rank your site. A carefully managed PPC campaign ensures you do not pay over the odds for your keywords and you gain targeted traffic within your budget limitations. High returns can be made from PPC advertising, particularly if your website has specific calls to action and is able to convert traffic well.

What are the Pay per Click Advertising options?Google Adwords
The most popular search advertising platform is Google Adwords. Not only will your ads appear alongside the regular Google search results, but also on Ask Jeeves & AOL. You can opt to have your ads shown on their content network in addition to the search network and select sites where you would like your ads to be shown.

Yahoo! Search Marketing is Yahoo!'s pay per clickYahoo! Search Marketing advertising platform. Ads are shown on Yahoo!, Tiscali, Wanadoo as well as their content network.

Microsoft's adCenter - launched in August 2006 -Microsoft AdCenter enables your ads to appear on MSN & Microsoft's network such as Hotmail. Microsoft has a unique demographic targeting option, which means you can target your audience by sex & age group.

Finally, there are numerous smaller PPC advertisingMiva options available such as Miva, great for advertising consumer products.
