This is a question that I’m asked quite often – “I’ve got a new site and I want to know how to get it listed in all the search engines….”
Some misconceptions include that simply buying a domain name will get it listed, or once the website is launched, it will automatically be listed and results will start coming in immediately as it will suddenly appear in the search results.
The best way of getting your website indexed (or found or listed) by the search
engines (the 4 main search engines you need to get it indexed by are
Google,
Yahoo!,
MSN &
Ask Jeeves) is to get a link to your website from another website
that is already in the search engines’ database. A quick check can ensure the
site you want the link from is indexed, by just typing either the company name,
e.g ‘My Link Partner’ or the whole url, i.e. www.mylinkpartner.com. If the site
appears in the search results then it has been indexed. You can also submit to
the search engines using the following links, but don’t rely on this solely to
get your site indexed:
Google submission page
Yahoo! submission page
MSN submission page
Ask does not have a submission page as they prefer to find new websites by following links.
Once you have a link pointing to your site from your link partner, it will take a few days to a few weeks for the search engines to index it as they all index websites according to their own timescales. Check often using the above method.
Do not confuse having your website indexed and in the search engines’ database to actual rankings. Once your website has been indexed, you then need to proactively promote it with search engine optimisation and link building to actually rank for your target key phrases.
If you are going to launch a new website on a brand new domain name, then to get the domain indexed early, put up a holding page at the earliest opportunity for your new site, and get a link to this holding page. When your new site is finally launched, the search engines will already know your domain name exists and the whole indexing process of your web pages will be much quicker!
